English Outline
The Curriculum
Students develop their skills in three key areas: reading, writing and speaking and listening. Texts studied as stimulus include all forms of written, spoken and visual material. The following are all likely to be studied across years 7-11: poetry, plays, TV material, short stories, comics, novels, newspapers, adverts, autobiography, diaries, travel writing, reports, electronic media such as websites and blogs. The school places a great deal of importance on literacy and because of this students study English for 4 hours a week. Some students who enter school below their expected level may have extra literacy lessons.
Assessment and Examinations
Each half term KS3 students are assessed at least once formally under “controlled conditions”. This may take the form of a reading, writing or speaking and listening assignment. Regular assessment of class work and homework combines with the formal test to give a clear picture of progress. There are exams for all year groups during the summer term. At KS4 students are prepared for exams in English Language and Literature. We follow the WJEC GCSE examination board syllabus.
Class groups
Students are taught in sets according to ability. At both Key stage 3 and 4 the average class size is 20 -26 and smaller in groups that may require additional support to access the curriculum. Those students who are identified as being gifted in English are encouraged to take advantage of extra opportunities offered to explore language and literature.
Extra-Curricular Activities
The department runs numerous poetry and creative writing competitions. We offer a range of educational visits: theatres, poetry workshops for example. We have a connection with Tottenham Hotspur football club and frequently use their learning resources suite. Theatre groups and authors regularly visit the school. A creative writing club and coursework catch up sessions run outside the school day. The exciting learning resource centre encourages all students to foster a love of reading for pleasure. There are regular revision sessions and coursework catch-up classes offered during school holidays and after school
